Ferry Propulsion Shaft Alignment — 45 m Vessel

Marine vessel propulsion survey in drydock
Client
MV Coastal Runner (sample)
Year
2024
Scope
Full shaft line, both engines
Deliverable
Alignment report + correction moves

Problem

Persistent stern tube bearing wear on a 45 m passenger ferry, with an eight-day drydock window booked at a BC yard — no time for trial-and-error alignment.

Method

Laser tracker survey of the complete shaft line to ±0.05 mm, bearing reaction analysis by P.Eng, and correction moves computed for each chock before machining.

Result

Chocks machined once, alignment verified before flood-up, vessel sailed on schedule. Bearing temperatures normal through the following season.
